The Turks and Caicos national men’s team defeated the Dominican Republic on Saturday afternoon at the Meridian Field in Grace Bay. The match was the first time the sides had met in the RAN Men’s XV’s Tournament.
The TCI Flamingoes started well and Joe Ryan scored the opening try after some good work from the forwards. The DR replied with a penalty kick before repeatedly infringing, leading to a yellow card against the DR scrum half. The Flamingoes made the most of the advantage and added another try through Dale Hodgkins. Both tries were unconverted by Gareth Butler and TCI led 10-3 at the half.
The DR started the second half with a roar and scored a quick try to catch the TCI napping. The conversion was unsuccessful and TCI kept the lead 10-8. TCI replied with a try in the corner to fullback Hendricks Joseph after hard yards from centre Franco ‘The Rhino’ Mompremier. Butler missed the conversion then followed up with a successful penalty kick (18-8). DR scored from a lovely backline play and successfully converted to bring the score to 18-15. Butler was cool and slotted two penalty kicks to wind down the clock and close out the game. It was a strong finish from the DR, however the TCI used their experience to keep a stranglehold on the match and record their first RAN Tournament victory, 24-15.
